Dr. Tenover has had a long-standing interest in mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and development of rapid diagnostic methods for infectious diseases. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and a fellow of both the American Academy of Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications and edited over 10 books. During his career in diagnostic microbiology and infection control, he has received numerous awards, including the ASM BD Biosciences Award for outstanding contributions to clinical microbiology in 2000, the Food and Drug Administration Group Recognition Award for outstanding service in 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Award for outstanding performance as a senior biomedical scientist in 2008, the Clinical Laboratory and Standards Institute Service Award for leadership and service in 2011, the Illinois Society for Microbiology Pasteur Lifetime Achievement Award in Microbiology in 2015, and University of Dayton Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2016.
