His research activity is focused on machine learning and image processing methodologies for remote sensing and energy applications. He is author or co-author or more than 200 papers in international scientific journals, conference proceedings, and edited books.
He was an Area Editor of Pattern Recognition Letters (PRL) from 2015 to 2018 and has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters since 2008. He was an Associate Editor of PRL from 2011 to 2015, and a Guest Editor of the 2015 special issue of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine.
He coordinated the Image Analysis and Data Fusion Technical Committee (IADF TC) of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, as Chair from 2013 to 2015 and as Co-Chair from 2015 to 2017. He was Publication Co-Chair and Theme Coordinator of all invited sessions of the 2015 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2015). He was Technical Program Co-Chair of the IEEE/ISPRS "EarthVision 2015 - Looking from above: When Earth observation meets vision" workshop at CVPR 2015 and Co-Organizer of the IEEE/ISPRS "EarthVision 2017 - Large scale computer vision for remote sensing imagery" at CVPR 2017.
