After his EE MSc degree (with honors) at the Univ. of Palermo in 1981, in 8/1983 Gaetano Assanto entered the PhD program in ECE at the University of Palermo, then at the U. of Iowa and later at the University of Arizona. In 1/1985 he joined the Optical Sciences Center of the U. of Arizona as Research and Teaching Assistant in nonlinear integrated optics. He completed his Ph.D. in 12/1986. From 1/1987 to 7/1988 he was Research Engineer at the Center for Electronic Research in Sicily. In 7/1988 he joined the Univ. of Arizona as Research Scientist, and from 9/1990 to 10/1992 the Center for Research in Electro Optics and Lasers, Orlando, Florida as Senior Research Scientist. Since 11/1992 teaches Optoelectronics with the EE Dept.of the University of Rome "Roma Tre", where he has also given courses in Integrated Optics and Nonlinear Optics. Dr. Assanto has given his course of Optoelectronics also at the Univ. of Rome "Sapienza" and at the Univ. of Rome "Tor Vergata". In October 1999, thru a national selection, he qualified for a Full Professorship in Electronics. He is a Fellow of the OSA, Fellow of IEEE-Photonics Society, member of the association of Novel Optical Material and Application (NOMA), the Italian Society for Optics and Photonics (SIOF), the Italian Association for Electrotechnics (AEI), the Italian Institute of Physics of the Matter (INFM), the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Interuniversity Consortium for the Structure of Matter (CNISM), the Italian Group of Electronics (GE), the Italian Society for Liquid Crystals (SICL), the Italian Society for Optics and Photonics (SIOF), the European Optical Society (EOS) and the European Physical Society (EPS). He is/has been in the editorial board of the J. Optical Society of America B, IEEE Photonics Journal, Laser Physics Review, Trends in Applied Sciences Research, Research Letters in Optics, International J. of Optics, J. of Nonlinear Optical Physics and Materials (JNOPM), Photonics Letters of Poland, Optics Letters, Nature Scientific Reports. In 2009-2011 was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer (two terms). He serves as Expert Evaluator for the European Union, the Academy of Science of Finland, the Romanian Academy of Sciences, the Italian Ministry for Education, the Italian-Israeli Foundation; he serves in scientific committees for international conferences such as CLEO-Europe, IQEC, IEEE-LEOS, SPIE, ICTON, NOA, NLGW, NLO etc. and is author/coauthor of more than 900 publications, contributed and invited papers in journals, books and conferences. .
