Dr Buchanan is, from 2014, the Director of the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design, one of the University's largest research centres with 10 faculty members and many PhD students and research associates. George's research interests surround information interaction: from web search, through browsing digital libraries, to accessing information on a mobile phone. Dr. Buchanan is an investigator of two current EPSRC funded projects, CHI+MED, which seeks to improve the safety of medical devices, and PLanComPS, which is investigating how to provide semantic libraries of programming language fragments in a way that encourages re-use of semantic specifications when creating new programming languages. He also has ongoing links with businesses such as Seeper and HubTV. Current collaborations include two projects with University College London and Swansea University, and an ongoing involvement with the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato.
