His research interests are related to methodologies and applications of statistical pattern recognition. His main research topics are classification reliability, multiple classifier systems and adversarial machine learning, with applications to text and image categorization, computer vision for intelligent video surveillance, security of biometric identity recognition systems, and gesture recognition. On these topics he published about ninety papers on international journals and conference proceedings, and five book chapters (see also his Google Scholar profile).

G. Fumera teaches courses on fundamentals of computer science for the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs on Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a course on Artificial Intelligence for the M.Sc. program on Electronic Engineering, at the University of Cagliari. He is also a member of the PhD Program in Electronic and Computer Engineering.
