My program of research has focused on both preventing and improving outcomes from traumatic brain injury, with a particular emphasis on older adults. I am presently conducting research to evaluate how the immune response to traumatic brain injury is influenced by age and its relationship to outcomes following traumatic brain injury. Together with collaborators at the University of Washington and elsewhere, I am also examining ways in which technology can aid in injury prevention or assist in the recovery process should a traumatic injury occur. I use a variety of approaches in my research, including basic science techniques, clinical epidemiology, and qualitative methods. I am actively involved in professional organizations such as the Gerontological Society of America and the National Neurotrauma Society.
