After finishing his bachelor of medicine at the University of Groningen in 2007, he enrolled in a MD / PhD program, at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Groningen, in which he studied the potential clinical (immunological) applications of hibernation. Research was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Heidelberg University (Germany), National Institutes of Health and University of Wisconsin (USA), as well as the University of Aberdeen (Scotland). His thesis and publications are awarded with multiple local and national prizes. In addition, he successfully completed the basic teaching qualification training and is certified as a pharmacologist and medical immunologist. Currently, he combines his residency in internal medicine with clinical pharmacology and a research fellowship on the study of mammalian hibernation as model to improve outcome of critical illness.
