个人简介
Dr Chung's teaching philosophy embraces a basic but important principle: “Value Every Single Student". He does not see students as just individuals but believe that they represent the future of Singapore. When an NIE student becomes a teacher, he/she is likely to teach more than 1,000 students in their career. Teachers play a pivotal role not only in imparting content knowledge to students but more critically to nurture them so that they become well-rounded individuals and contribute positively to society.
Dr Chung is a senior lecturer in the Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) Academic Group at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Prior to joining NIE NTU, Singapore, he led the Sociology of Sport Research Group at Korea National Sport University, the national elite sports centred institute and was the chief of secretary for the President of the Korean Society for the Sociology of Sport. He also used to work at Seoul National University of Education (SNUE), the national teacher preparation institute in South Korea. During his time in SNUE, he received SNUE Excellent Staff Award 2011 from the university president. In addition, he served on the NIE Staff Welfare Committee and was awarded NIE Excellence in Service Award 2018 from the NIE Director at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. He currently serves as a chairman of the Bullying and Cyberbullying Prevention and Intervention Committee in Singapore Korean International School (SKIS). He was also awarded the SKIS Leadership Award 2020 from the school principal for leading as a chairman of the Management Committee.
His research interests lie in analysing Physical Education (PE) and sport-related issues to understand complex links between PE, sport, health and fitness, dance, and recreation, drawing from socio-cultural and pedagogical perspectives. His researches were published in the SSCI journals. The research topics that he has been publishing are the following five areas: (a) analysis of sociological and pedagogical issues in the area of PE and sport research; (b) archaeological and/or genealogical analysis derived from Foucault's theoretical concepts; (c) history of the present as to the emergence and transformation in a wide range of domains such as PE, sport and physical culture; (d) issues of existence and absence surrounding PE and sport in the local and international contexts; (e) construction of sport policy discourse.
He presents his research at the international conferences organised by International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA) and the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) regularly. He serves as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Applied Sports Science and is a section editor for the ACPES Journal of Physical Education, Sports and Health. His professional articles were featured in Korean leading newspapers and he was appointed as a keynote speaker at a number of international conferences including Olympic colloquium, PE and sport policy symposium, and PE workshop.
