Bio
Ig Ibert Bittencourt is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Alagoas (Brazil) and Co-Director of the Center of Excellence for Social Technologies. Professor Ig is researching in the field of Computers in Education. He has around one thousand citations and he is investigating how to improve the e-learning experience in Intelligent Educational Systems. He is doing an interdisciplinary research using i) computational solutions, such as Ontologies, Data Mining, gamification and affective computing; and ii) psychological theories, such as Flow Theory, Stereotype Threat and ACT Model. His research has impact in the following ways: i) Technology transfer and co-creation of applications (JOINT:Java Ontology Integrated Toolkit; W3C Recommendation Data on the Web Best Practices); ii) Social and Economic Impact: he created two awarded companies (MeuTutor – used by more than 50 thousand students - and Linked Knowledge); iii) Popularization of Science and Public Policy: Prof. Ig co-authored the book “Dados Abertos Conectados”, the only book in Portuguese about LOD and it is the reference book for several universities. He is also working with the Ministry of Education, Brazilian Computer Society and Center of innovation to Brazilian Education to propose and support the implementation of educational technologies via public policies.
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Professor Ig Ibert Bittencourt is researching in the field of Computers in Education. He has around one thousand citations and he is investigating how to improve the learning experience in Intelligent Educational Systems. He is doing an interdisciplinary research using i) computational solutions, such as Linked Data, Ontologies, Data Mining and gamification; and ii) psychological theories, such as Flow Theory, Stereotype Threat and ACT Model. His research has impacting in the following ways:
1. Technology transfer and co-creation of applications: Prof. Ig is one of the creators of a toolkit to quickly develop Semantic Web applications, called JOINT (Java Ontology Integrated Toolkit. This tool is the first one that integrates results from the research community into a single tool that can handle the development of software using semantic technology. It has been sponsored by W3C (Consortium created by the inventor of the Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee) in Brazil. He also contributed with W3C Recommendation Data on the Web Best Practices, Data Usage Vocabularies and Data Quality Vocabularies. Additionally, he created the foundations to produce a Semantic Web-based Intelligent Tutoring System that help the democratization of personalized learning. This technology is the first commercial product to use gamification techniques to support student’s motivations, educational data mining to extract useful information about users’ interactions and ontologies to support intelligent adaptation.
2. Social and Economic Impact: Research results of Prof. Ig were responsible for the creation of two awarded companies (MeuTutor and Linked Knowledge) and the cooperation with another company (Systemic Bilingual). Based on that, it was generated around 50 direct and 200 indirect employments. In addition, such companies invested on research and innovation around U$ 2 million. Finally, MeuTutor impacted around 50 thousand students and it is expect to impact around 200 thousand students until 2018.
3. Popularization of Science and Public Policy: Prof. Ig co-authored the book “Dados Abertos Conectados”, which is the only book in Portuguese about Linked Open Data and it is the reference book of several Brazilian universities to Semantic Web and Linked Data courses. Ig Ibert co-coined the term “Dados Abertos Conectados” to refer to Linked Open Data and it is accepted by W3C Brazil as the official translation to Portuguese. He is also working with Ministry of Education, Brazilian Computer Society and Center of Innovation to Brazilian Education to propose and support the implementation of educational technologies public policies.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I believe we need a paradigm shift in a way we can build a bridge between social relevant practices with scientific approaches to better understand how to improve the world. I am strongly committed to collaboratively involve, engage and work with different stakeholders of the ecosystem of Research, Development and Disruptive Innovation in Computer Science to shape the 21st Century.
The United Nations defined seventh goals to be developed for a sustainable world, such as good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, reduced inequalities, and so on. Through such goals, computing educators, researchers, and professionals should work together to inspire dialogue, share knowledge and address the computer science challenges in a meaningful and purposeful way.
