Dr Ioanna Nixon is a Professor of Practice at Management Science Department, Business School, at Strathclyde University, a Senior NHS Consultant Oncologist, and an exeutive coach. She specialises in the treatment of sarcomas, Head and Neck cancers, clinical leadership, and clinical innovations. She holds National and International leadership roles in oncology and research, including as Clinical Director for Oncology Services, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the biggest Healthcare Board in Europe, and Cancer Innovation Lead for West of Scotland. She has served as the Clinical Lead for the Scottish Sarcoma Network(2015-2021), the Regional Quality Improvement and Safety Lead, the Chair for the National Cancer Research Institute(NCRI) Head and Neck Epidemiology and Survivorship CSG and as a member of the New Drug Committee(SMC). She is also a Board member of the British Sarcoma Group(BSG), a member of the UK Experts Group for Sarcoma Service Specification (SAG) and a member of the NCRI Sarcoma Clinical Study Group. Dr Nixon is also Vice President at the Hellenic Society of social care and well-being for children and Teenager and Young Adults(TYA), promoting health and well- being in children and young people.
Ioanna holds developmental roles as an educational supervisor for junior doctors and specialty trainees in oncology and an appraiser for NHS Consultants. She is also an academic mentor for PhD students and a mentor in National Leadership Programmes, including the Scottish Improvement Leader’s programme by NES.
She was awarded with a PhD in Radiotherapy in 2013(Kapodistriakon University, Athens, Greece), an MPH(Epidemiology, Liverpool University), holds a level 5 CMI Chartered Management and a level 5 in medical education. She is also an AoEC accredited executive coach(performance, leadership, career and resilience). She facilitates workshops on compassion and resilience, including a BMJ Masterclass(2018) and drives the wellbeing agenda through the Quality Improvement Group.
Ioanna works with cancer charities both formally as a Board Member for the Throat Cancer Foundation Trust, as well as informally supporting campaigns to promote patient care. She also works with patients and carers driving a patient-centered research agenda. She was president for the British Sarcoma Group Conference 2020 in Glasgow and facilitator for the RISE events on resilience for patients and carers in Scotland.
In 2018 she was awarded a Founding Fellowship of Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management(FMLM) for her leadership and contribution to patient-centered care and most recently an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Radiologists(FRCR) for her contribution to oncology specialty at International Level. Her team has been finalists for the BMJ Awards Cancer Team of the Year 2020 and now finalists for the HSJ Partnership awards 2021.
Ioanna is also finalist for the Scottish Women's Awards 2023 under "Service in Medicine" catergory.
Outside medicine and academia, she is the founder of JackNDrBetty books, WEE LEADERS, and The Empower Clinic, initiatives aiming at supporting people prevent disease, and foster their wellbeing to live a long, healthy, purposeful life.
