Research Summary
Since 2011, Dr. Irene Pluchinotta has been designing and leading decision analysis interventions and participatory modelling workshops with large stakeholder groups involved in generating and evaluating policy alternatives and strategies, in case studies across Europe. She develops qualitative and quantitative System Dynamics models and her areas of expertise include eliciting stakeholders’ knowledge, preferences and problem frames, using Systems Dynamics modelling approaches and Problem Structuring Methods.
Dr. Pluchinotta has experience in contributing to the writing research projects and to their development, including also large scale multi-disciplinary project (e.g. EU-Horizon 2020 and EPSRC calls).
She has been recently been appointed as guest editor for a Special Issue on EURO Journal on Decision Processes. This journal is one of the official publication of EURO, the Association of European Operational Research Societies and the special issue is on “Decision Processes In Policy Design”.
In 2015, she obtained a double PhD in environmental engineering and computer science on the topic of decision analysis and participatory System Dynamics in the context of conflictual multi-stakeholder water management. Thanks to the joint agreement between the Technical University of Bari (Italy) and Paris-Dauphine University (France), she improved her background in Decision Analysis, System Dynamics, and Operational Research.
In 2018 and 2019, she was a research consultant in System Dynamics and Policy Design. She worked as System Dynamics expert in the EPSRC project “Urban Flood Resilience” lead by the University of Nottingham, to collaboratively identify strategies for sustainable water management in Ebbsfleet Garden City (UK). As expert in Policy Design, she worked in collaboration with the G124 project of the Renzo Piano Foundation, coordinating the activities for the design of urban regeneration strategies in a peripheral neighbourhood in Syracuse (IT).
In 2016 and 2017, Dr. Pluchinotta developed a participatory instrument, integrating Decision Science and Design Theory to formally assist the innovative design of policy alternatives in the environmental context. Since 2015, she has been involved in other five large-scale projects, becoming case study coordinator and Work-Package leader.
Her research is regularly presented at leading international conferences and has been published in top international journals. She is a regular review peer for research-focused journals and she has been invited as session chair or speaker in different conferences and seminars.
