Bio
Isabel Eiser is a Ph.D. candidate and research assistant at University of Hamburg.
Her focus are studies in mass media and culture, coloniality, reparation, discourse analysis, and digital humanities. She is currently interested in studying discursive strategies in the production of (counter-)hegemony and subjects in visual, textual, and material discourses using digital tools for qualitative analysis.
Her Ph.D. thesis is titled "Becoming an Emblem. From Colonial Propaganda to Decolonial Movement. A Discourse Analysis on the Benin Bronzes." The PhD thesis will be submitted in 2023 and published in 2024. The Ph.D. program is supervised by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Zimmerer. It is located at the research center "Hamburg's (post-)colonial legacy" and was supported by a three-year doctorate fellowship by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.
Since 2021 she has been working as a research assistant and project coordinator in the D-WISE research project, led by Prof. Dr. Gertraud Koch. In a co-creation approach between Cultural Anthropologists and Informatics at the University of Hamburg, the research project aims at investigating the potentials of manual and digital approaches to hermeneutically oriented discourse analyses while developing a web-based working environment for digital discourse analysis.
In October 2022 she lectured at the Institute of Anthropological Studies giving a seminar titled "Discursive struggles on (post)colonial legacies in the 21st century: Discourses on Restitution and the Benin Bronzes."
She studied Historical Anthropology and Art Education at Goethe University Frankfurt, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The focus of her studies was Visual Anthropology and Museum Communication. Her Magister thesis in Historical Anthropology was titled "The Restitution Claims of Australian Aborigines and the Attitude of Ethnographic Museums," supervised by Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Kohl.
After graduation, she worked for three years as a volunteer, freelancer, and trainee assistant mainly in public relations in the fields of humanitarian social support, music theatre, arts, and science communication, as well as marketing and brand communication in Frankfurt am Main.
