Recent Developments and Prospects for Linac Based Light Sources
LINAC based X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) are regarded as the 4th generation synchrotron radiation light source providing Angstrom spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution for most cutting-edge discoveries in many scientific researches. In this talk, I will first give a brief comparison of LINAC based light sources, such as the LIANC Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), and storage ring based light sources, such as Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) at National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). I will then outline the FEL physics and major relevant technologies, the operating XFEL facilities and those being commissioned and planed. Focus will then be put on the R&D to reach high brightness XFEL, and novel approaches for compact coherent X-ray sources. I will also introduce the proposed VUV/THz FEL at NSRRC. Frontier scientific researches enabled by high-brightness XFELs will be selected.
