I am interested in understanding RNA based mechanisms involved in the control of cellular processes, in particular those that are related to disease and efficiency of cell based production systems.
The aim of my research is to understand regulatory properties of different RNA modifications. In particular, I am interested in the discovery and characterization of 5’RNA capping with cellular nucleotide containing metabolites, such as FAD, NAD+ and dpCoA, across all kingdoms of life. I recently discovered that the Hepatitis C Virus RNA is 5’FAD capped and going forward I will investigate the molecular mechanisms related to this novel type of 5’RNA cap and how it affects the viral life cycle. In addition, I will focus on the discovery and characterization of metabolite RNA capping in other viruses and bacterial species.
