Dr Jesse Young is an early career researcher specialising in psychiatric epidemiology with leading expertise in data linkage methodology. He is currently employed as a NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at The University of Melbourne, and as a Senior Research Officer at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
He also holds Adjunct positions at the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Western Australia and at the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University. Since 2013, Dr Young has attracted over $1.5M (AUD) in competitive grant funding: $1.3M as a Chief Investigator and $251,000 as an Associate Investigator. He has authored a scientific book chapter, federal reports and 48 peer-reviewed publications, with a further 8 articles currently under review in international journals. He is a member of the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare’s National Prisoner Health Information Committee and Technical Expert Group, guiding the world-leading surveillance system for health of justice-involved adults. He has discussed his research on national TV and radio in Australia and internationally. He has led reports commissioned by state/national government departments; acted as Session and Panel Chair and presented his research findings at international conferences; presented his research by invitation to national government committees, prison/health Ministers across the Asia-Pacific region, health and correctional authorities, stakeholders, and service providers; and lectured by invitation at universities nationally and internationally. His research has been cited in, and informed, national and international guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorder, the prevention of overdose, and access to health services for people released from prison.
