Jian Liu currently works at the Department of Biological Sciences, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Jian's research has been focusing on understanding the mechanisms of ALS pathogenesis. More recently, her lab is working on carbonic anhydrase I (CA1) and its unknown function in motor neurons and potential modulating effects in ALS pathology. Using fly models of ALS and in vitro cell cultures, increasing evidence are suggesting that CA1 can induce apoptosis via signalling pathways that might involved Derlin-1-mediated ERAD downstream of ER stress responses. Data from these studies are consistent with and supporting that dysfunction in ER stress responses is a key mechanism in ALS pathology.
