Dr. Juanhuix, after short period working on granular metallic alloys using X-ray spectroscopy at CEA-Grenoble (France), moved to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1996-2000) where she earned a PhD in Materials Science studying the structure and function of living muscles by small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS). The thesis proved for the first time by X-ray diffraction that the two myosin heads in the pairs found in the thick filament of the sarcomere show different conformations in isometric contraction state, while showing similar conformations at rest state.
From 2001 to 2004 she worked as a beamline scientist at the Spanish Beamline (BM16) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble, France). She redesigned that former powder diffraction beamline into a MX and SAXS beamline, maintained it, gave support to the users, and become proficient in protein structure determination by macromolecular X-ray crystallography (MX) studying the complement protein C1q (immune system).
Since 2004 and until 2016 Dr. Juanhuix was appointed the Beamline Responsible of BL13-XALOC at the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source, where she designed, managed, procured and commissioned the entire beamline, from basic infrastructure to high-accuracy instrumentation. To this purpose, she led a group of scientists, and mechanical, control and electronics engineers. As a result of this work, the beamline was brought to user operation in 2012 successfully from day one. During this time she was promoted to Section Head of Life Sciences, a position that she currently holds.
From 2016 on she is in charge of designing, managing and building the first microfocus beamline at ALBA synchrotron dedicated to macromolecular crystallography, which is foreseen to enter into user operation along 2021. The beamline will implement the new methods currently developing in this field based on serial crystallography, microfluidics, native phasing methods at long wavelengths and data collection strategies from micron-sized crystals.
She is currently leading a project on the effect of the radiation damage on the structure of proteins at near atomic resolution (using MX) and at a lower resolution in solution (using SAXS), the use of scavengers to reduce radiation damage and the effect of irradiation-induced oxidative stress in the functionality and structure of aldo-keto reductases while carrying out her duties as the Head of the Life Sciences Section. She is also an activist for the rights of the transgender individuals from a feminist perspective.
