Bio
Jan Willem Coebergh is a public health physician-cancer epidemiologist who has gained a experience in a variety of work in Cancer Control and Cancer Management in the last 20 years. This not only includes projections of the future burden of Cancer in the Netherlands 1990-2015, as member of the explorative Signalling Committee of the Dutch Cancer Society, but also a range of studies of variation in survival and patterns of care at regional, national and European level. He conducts a variety of studies on cancer in childhood and cancer in the elderly, thereby studying the role of co-morbidity at diagnosis. Breast, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer are of major interest besides studies of all cancers with important changes in incidence such as gastro-esophageal cancer and testicular cancer.
Besides involvement in a wide range of research in descriptive, etiological and prognostic cancer epidemiology which nowadays also pertains to quality of life in long term survivors (with over 250 peer-reviewed publications), he is a member of European steering committees on behalf of or representing input from European cancer registries: the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR, 1999-2005), the Automated Childhood Cancer Information System (ACCIS, since 2000) and Eurocare (survival from 1992-2005). He is part of the committee of investigators of the ERSPC (European Randomised study of Prostate Cancer Screening for the Antwerp group and chairs the epidemiology committee of the Melanoma EORTC study group.
