个人简介
However, because I'm a clinical neuropsychologist and I like working with patients, I have always done some clinical work, which focusses on identifying the different thought processes (attention, memory) that are impaired after someone's brain is damaged. My research is largely focused on what areas of the brain and what thought processes are important for performing movements. I've studied motor learning and imitation of everyday activities (brushing your teeth), both of which often depend on internal motor programs that are stored in the brain. People who have had strokes or are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease or Huntington’s Disease often have such motor problems, which affect their ability to do everyday activities. More recently I've studied how our thought processes are affected by post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which occurs in some people who experience extreme stress, like during war. I especially want to know if successful psychotherapy for PTSD is associated with improved thought processes. I've been a neuropsychologist for a long time and have been very lucky to be recognized by the National Academy of Neuropsychology with a Lifetime Career Contribution Award and to be elected president of three different neuropsychology societies. I also really enjoyed being the Editor of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society for 10 years. I like being an Associate Editor for Frontiers for Young Minds because I think it is important for scientists to do a better job of talking about science with people who are not scientists---like kids.
When I'm not doing neuropsychology stuff, I love to walk, lift weights, ski, read, and, of course, talk--especially about politics.
