He is a recipient of an NIH Director's Early Independence Award, a CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research Award, a Sontag Foundation Distinguished Scientist Award, and an Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer R Accelerated Award.
His independent research lab combines concepts and approaches from biochemistry with methods and analytical tools from cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, genomics, and computational biology to determine how the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes regulates gene expression. His laboratory has revealed fundamental principles of how the spatial segregation of chromatin into distinct regions, or compartments, of the nucleus imparts biological function and how this compartmentalization goes awry in disease, including cancer. His long-term goal is to develop pharmacological intervention of aberrant chromatin 3D structure as a novel therapeutic approach for disease treatment.
