The research activity is aimed at the following sectors: 1) Urban pollution, also considering the CO2 sequestration capacity of plants; contribution of plants to improving air quality and limiting noise levels; bioindicators and bioaccumulators; the role of avenues, parks and hedges in the urban system. 2) Photosynthetic efficiency and phenotypic plasticity, considering the relationships between the morphological, anatomical and physiological features of the leaves; plasticity in response to light; phenotypic plasticity; efficiency in the use of carbon and water; adaptive strategies of plants in response to stressors including climate change, gas exchanges; photosynthetic pigments; the adaptive strategies of Mediterranean species; key plant traits; tolerance threshold at the level of species and ecosystems. 3) Landscape analysis, considering the biomass and the productivity capacity of the different systems; analysis of the tolerance threshold of species and ecosystems to anthropogenic perturbations and natural events, use of the maps of the Leaf Area Index (LAI) and of plant biomass for the management of highly valued areas. 4) Phenology and growth analysis, considering the effects of climatic factors on the onset and duration of individual phenophases; leaf longevity; growth analysis and efficiency; in situ and ex situ conservation; reintroduction projects of rare or endangered species.
