Monisha Ghosh is a research professor at the University of Chicago, and conducts research on wireless
technologies for 5G cellular and next generation Wi-Fi systems. Prior to this, she worked at Interdigital,
Philips Research and Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, on various wireless systems such as the HDTV
broadcast standard, cable standardization and on cognitive radio for the TV White Spaces. She is a Fellow of
the IEEE.
Dr. Ghosh led the Philips effort in the TV White Spaces on prototyping, regulatory issues and
standardization. The sensing prototype built at Philips incorporated a number of algorithms developed by
her. This prototype was extensively tested in the lab and field by the FCC and performed better than other
comparable prototypes submitted by other companies. One of the first fully functional cognitive radio
prototypes was demonstrated to the FCC, based in large part on her work. She was also one of the key
evangelists for White Spaces, working regularly with the FCC commissioners for White Space rule making.
In addition she was an active contributor to two industry standards in this area: IEEE 802.22 and Ecma 392.
She was recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding contributions to IEEE 802.22.
