María Jesús Rodrigo es Científica Titular del CSIC y forma parte del grupo de Fisiología, Patología y Biotecnología Postcosecha. Sus líneas de investigación actuales están centradas en la caracterización de rutas metabólicas de componentes importantes en la calidad organoléptica y nutricional de los frutos, y el estudio fisiológico y molecular de la calidad postcosecha. Para desarrollar esta línea de trabajo utiliza diferentes tipos metodologías y estrategias que abarcan desde estudios fisiológicos y bioquímicos hasta abordajes biotecnológicos y de genómica funcional.
Se licenció en C. Biológicas (Bioquímica, Universitat de València) en 1991 y realizó la tesis doctoral (1992-1996) en el Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas (CSIC-UPV) de Valencia sobre el papel de las hormonas vegetales en la fructificación de guisante y dirigida por Dr. J.L. García Martínez . Parte el trabajo de la tesis doctoral se llevó a cabo en el laboratorio del Dr. P.Hedden (Long Ahston Research Station, Bristol, UK) desarrollando difrentes metodologías para el análisis de fitohormonas. Posteriormente, se incorporó como postdoctoral (1996-2000) al laboratorio de la Dr. D. Bartels (Dpto. Plant Breeding and Yield Physiology; Max-Planck Institute, Colonia, Alemania) centrando su trabajo en el estudio de las bases moleculares de la tolerancia a la deshidratación en plantas [Postdoc-MEC y EU-Marie Curie del programa de Biotecnología]. En el año 2000 se incorporó como contratada postdoctoral (MEC y JAE-CSIC) al grupo de Fisiología, Patología y Biotecnología Postcosecha del IATA-CSIC (Valencia) para estudiar la influencia de factores pre- y post-cosecha en la mejora de la calidad de los frutos cítricos. Esta estancia se prorrogó con un contrato “Ramón y Cajal” que le permitió iniciar una nueva línea de trabajo en el grupo encaminada a abordar mediante aproximaciones fisiológicas y moleculares la regulación del metabolismo y acumulación de carotenoides en frutos cítricos tanto durante la maduración como en diferentes condiciones postcosecha de interés. Algunos de los trabajos realizados en esta área han sido pioneros describiendo por primera vez enzimas clave en la síntesis o catabolismo de carotenoides. De forma complementaria también ha trabajado en el papel del la fitohormona ácido abscísico (ABA) y la calidad postcosecha de frutos cítricos, así como el estudio de otros compuestos relevantes en la calidad de los frutos como los volátiles (aroma) y la regulación del metabolismo de vitamina C (participación en proyecto RG-Marie Curie). En los últimos años se han establecido numerosas colaboraciones tanto nacionales como internacionales para abordar aspectos complementarios del estudio de carotenoides en otros frutos y matrices vegetales, así como aspectos nutricionales o funcionales de los carotenoides. Actualmente es miembro de Sociedad Internacional de Carotenoides y de la Sociedad Española de Fisiología Vegetal. Ha formado parte de la RED Ibercarot (CYTED) (2012-15), la Red de Excelencia CaRed (2015-2018)(2018-2020)(Ministerio Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades) y la acción COST Eurocaroten (EU) (2016-2020)(Representante Substitute MC, España), todas ellas centradas en la investigación multidisciplinar de carotenoides. Hasta la fecha es coautora de más de 90 publicaciones científicas y capítulos de libros, ha participado como investigadora o responsable en numerosos proyectos de ámbito internacional, nacional y autonómico, y ha codirigido 6 Tesis doctorales. Ha sido profesora asociada de la Universitat de Valencia durante los cursos 2006 a 2008 de la asignatura `Alimentos Funcionales´ del Grado de Nutrición Humana y Dietética, y ha impartido diferentes cursos y seminarios de Postgrado en programas de doctorado nacionales e internacionales.
