She has taught courses in Personality, in Health Psychology, and in
Food, Eating and Body Image, and has served as Chair of Academic Senate at Flinders
University. Her research interests centre around body image broadly defined, and
include the sociocultural antecedents (particularly media) of weight, dieting and body
image issues among both adults and children. Professor Tiggemann was inaugural
Associate Editor of the journal Body Image, and currently sits on the Editorial Boards of
Body Image, International Journal of Eating Disorders, and Journal of Health
Psychology. She has presented keynote and plenary addresses at international
congresses, and is author of more than 300 book chapters and research articles. Her
research is highly cited (Google Scholar h-index = 91) and she has had continuous
funding from the Australian Research Council since 2006. Since 2013 she has become
interested in the re-framing of body image from a negative to a positive construct and
the relationships between positive body image and mental and physical health. She
featured (interview) in the full-length documentary entitled Embrace (dir. Taryn
Brumfitt, 2016) which received a national release (August-Sept 2016) through
Palace/Nova and Hoyts Cinemas. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in
Australia.
