Career Trajectory
Bio
I have been involved in applied work with a range of teams and individual athletes since 2006. In 2009, I gained BASES accreditation as a Sport and Exercise Scientist (physiology support) through my scientific support work with teams and individual athletes. I continue to work in applied settings focussing on areas related to strength and conditioning more specifically. I was the Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Limerick Senior Hurling Team from 2013-2015 and the Limerick U20 Hurling Team from 2018-2020. My main responsibilities in this role were:
• Writing the periodised training programme
• Planning, delivering and monitoring all field-based conditioning sessions
• Planning, delivering and monitoring all gym-based conditioning sessions
• Ensuring strength and conditioning programmes are individually tailored and position specific
• Monitoring training load and recovery in players
• Working alongside the medical team and physiotherapists in the planning, delivering and
monitoring of pre-habilitation and rehabilitation programmes
• Working alongside the team nutritionist to ensure player’s dietary requirements are being met.
I have over 10 years’ experience teaching in Higher Education using different teaching styles to meet different learning objectives. I have a passion for teaching with student-centred learning at the core of my teaching philosophy.
I am an advocate of problem -based learning (PBL) and have used this approach since 2006 as I feel it fosters independent and critical thinking as well as a deeper understanding of complex issues. I have conducted funded research for the HLSTN relating to the development of an online resource bank for PBL in sports-related courses. I have delivered seminars and workshops relating to PBL in sport and exercise sciences at events organised by the HEA and BASES and presented at the EHS Teaching and Learning Symposium on maximising student engagement through PBL.
I strive to ensure that my teaching and the content therein is up-to-date and research informed and aim to instil in my students a passion for lifelong learning. With respect to assessment tasks, I aim to devise ‘authentic assessments’ whereby the assessment links with the type of knowledge, skills and competencies our students will require professionally in their future careers. My current teaching interests relate to strength and conditioning, coaching science and sports performance. In October 2013, I was shortlisted for the Winter Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of Limerick. The evaluation panel described me as a “passionate teacher who makes the link between teaching and research in the classroom”.
My main research interests are in applied field based research whereby the findings have implications in terms of the preparation, training or monitoring of athletes. I continue to explore the effects of fatigue on sports performance (PhD topic) as well as a number of topics related to testing and monitoring of athletes, strength and conditioning as well as training techniques and their effectiveness. I am currently engaged in collaborative research on these topics with colleagues at Coventry University, University of Rennes, Bond University and the University of Wolverhampton.
I am currently an invited journal reviewer for the following peer-reviewed journal:
• Acta Pediatrica
• American Journal of Human Biology
• European Journal of Sport Science
• Journal of Sports Medicine
• Journal of Sports Medicine and Doping Studies
• Physiology & Behavior
• Annals of Human Biology
• International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology
At undergraduate level, I have supervised numerous (50+) final year projects over the past 10 years. At postgraduate level, I have again supervised numerous dissertations on the MSc in Sports Studies at Newman University. At the University of Limerick, I continue to supervise research projects on the taught BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences and MSc Sports Performance. I have supervised 8 PhD students to completion. I currently supervise 4 PhD students.
