Professor Izutsu is a corporate member of the Science Council of Japan, a member of the Japanese National Committee for International Union of Radio Science (URSI), Editor-in-chief, Electronics Express published from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE). He is a fellow, IEICE, life fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a senior member at the Optical Society of America (OSA) and a member of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP). He received the Best Paper Award several times throughout his career and was the recipient of the Award for Significant Achievement in 1988 from IEICE. He also received the Sakurai Kenjiro Award in 2007.
Professor Izutsu’s research has focused on photonics, especially guided-wave optoelectronic devices, and he has co-authored nearly 400 peer-reviewed and invited research papers and conference presentations, more than 30 patents, and 15 books. In 1977 and 1978, he was the first to report on light modulation experiments wider than10 GHz bandwidth by using original device
structures and operation schemes. In 1981, he published his research on the integration of light modulators on a single tip to realize a novel function, or quadrature light modulation, which is widely used in present coherent light communication systems. His latest book published by IEICE in 2012 is entitled “Fundamentals of Light Wave Engineering” (in Japanese).
