Dr. Matthew T. Roe received his MD degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1993 and his MHS (Masters of Health Sciences in Clinical Research) degree in 2001 from the same institution. Dr. Roe completed an Internal Medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center from 1993-1996 and a Cardiovascular Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation from 1996-1999. Dr. Roe was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine, with Tenure, in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and the DCRI in January 2011.
Dr. Roe has served as the principal investigator at the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) Coordinating Center for numerous clinical trials investigating anti-platelet therapies for acute myocardial infarction (MI) as well as myocardial protection agents for patients with acute ST-elevation MI. Additionally, Dr. Roe served as the co-principal investigator for the CRUSADE national quality improvement initiative performed at almost 500 hospitals in the United States from 2001-2006. Dr. Roe is the previous Chairman of the Research and Publications Sub-Committee for the American College of Cardiology (ACC) ACTION Registry-GWTG program (2007-2010) evaluating care patterns for patients with acute MI at hospitals across the United States. Dr. Roe currently serves as a member of the ACC National Cardiovascular Data Registry Scientific Oversight Committee and the American Heart Association (AHA) Mission Lifeline Scientific Task Force. Finally, Dr. Roe has been the Principal Investigator for the Data Analytic Center activities at the DCRI for the ACC-NCDR CathPCI Registry, the ACTION Registry-GWTG Program, and the AHA Mission Lifeline program for the past 6 years.
Dr. Roe served as the Associate Director of the DCRI’s Clinical Research Fellowship Program from 2006-2010 and assumed the role of the Director of this program in June, 2010. Dr. Roe has contributed to the expansion of the DCRI fellowship program to approximately 20-25 fellows per year from a variety of specialties at Duke University Medical Center including cardiology, pediatrics, nephrology, oncology, gastroenterology, and neurology, as well as numerous international fellows from a variety of countries. Dr. Roe supervises the faculty mentorship program for the DCRI research fellows and won the Robert M. Califf Mentorship Award in 2008 (awarded annually by the DCRI research fellows to the best faculty mentor in each academic year). Additionally, Dr. Roe served as the Fellowship Director for the American Heart Association Pharmaceutical Roundtable Outcomes Research Grant for the DCRI Outcomes Research Center from 2008-2013.
Dr. Roe was also selected as the faculty director of the DCRI Global Outcomes Commercial Megatrials group in May, 2013. He has participated in the leadership and conduct of numerous clinical trials focused on therapies for acute coronary syndromes and chronic cardiovascular disease, including dal-OUTCOMES-2, TRILOGY-ACS, and ODYSSEY Outcomes. Through his experiences, he has developed a keen interest in the operational conduct of clinical trials, as well as in the national and global academic collaborations that are critical to the successful execution of clinical trials.
