His current research interests include artificial intelligence, knowledge discovery, biomedical image processing, multi-agent systems, and trusted & secure systems; He was the chief investigator in a number of Australian Research Council (ARC) grants, under both the Discovery and Linkage schemes, with the total funding amount exceeding $4 million dollars. He has also conducted successful collaborative research projects with various industry partners including the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) of Australia.

His professional service includes editorial and review board memberships of several leading journals and program committee and senior program committee memberships of numerous national and international conferences. Recently, he was the program co-chair of The 14th Pacific-Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI 2010); and conference co-chair of The 12th International Conferences on Security of Information and Networks (SIN 2019).
