Pedro Matos Soares is currently Principal Researcher at the Institute Dom Luis (IDL) and Invited Lecturer in the Department of Geographic Engineering, Geophysics and Energy, both at Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. In 2004, Pedro has completed his PhD in Physics (Meteorology) at the University of Lisbon with the thesis “Parameterization of Turbulence and Boundary Layer Clouds in Atmospheric Models”. During the last decade has focused his research on regional climate modelling, climate change, extreme events and land-atmosphere-ocean interactions.
Pedro has participated in many international and national projects. Currently, he is the coordinator of the Portuguese team of CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment) effort, and of the Portuguese participation in the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Studies “Coupled regional modelling of land-atmosphere-ocean interactions over western-southern Africa under climate change” and CORDEX “Convective phenomena at high resolution over Europe and the Mediterranean”, both endorsed by the World Climate Research Program. Pedro was also an active member of the GCSS (GEWEX Cloud System Studies) Boundary Layer Cloud Working Group.
Pedro has been the PI of the REWRITE (Regional Clouds and water balance in a changing climate) project, the first in Portugal devoted to high resolution regional climate modelling, and, presently, he is the coordinator of the SOLAR (Earth System Modelling of the Eastern Atlantic Region) project, and the Co-Coordinator of the LEADING “Land use changes and mitigation of global warming” project, all financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Finally, Pedro is now the IDL-RG1 Group Leader (Climate change, atmosphere-land-ocean processes and extremes).
