SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS
• Search and Question Answering
o Knowledge Based Question Answering: Designed a general probabilistic framework and implemented
a system for automatically answering natural language questions posed on community QA websites using
semi-structured knowledge bases such as Wikipedia.
o Automated Vertical Search Engine Generation: Developed a general method for automatically
constructing topic specific search engines using search query logs. Used the method to build two vertical
search engines on Photography and Automobiles.
o Medical Case Retrieval: Developed a search engine which takes a long natural language medical case
query as input and retrieves matching medical cases from medical literature.
• Information Extraction
o Citation Context Extraction: Developed a Hidden Markov Model based method for extracting
sentences referring to a cited paper without an explicit citation.
o Shallow Information Extraction: Developed a method for automatically extracting sentences discussing
treatments or medications from web forum posts.
• Other Text Analysis Applications
o Webpage Reliability Prediction: Automatically predicted the reliability of a healthcare related websites.
o Symptom Graph Mining: Mined and analyzed a graph of symptom relationships to efficiently discover
additional symptoms related to a disease.
