Raj B. Apte (M'86-SM'02) was born in Mountain View, CA, in 1967. He received a B.S. summa cum laude with distinction in electrical engineering from University of California, Berkeley, in 1987, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, in 1988 and 1994, respectively.
He is presently Senior Engineer and Manager, Prototype Devices and Circuits, Electronic Materials and Devices Laboratory, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), CA. As a summer student at MIT Lincoln Labs, Cambridge, he worked on radar tomography. At Stanford, he worked on spread-spectrum coding and semiconductor lasers before demonstrating the first two-dimensional bi-stable micro-electromechanical diffractive display, the Grating Light Valve (GLV). This work was subsequently licensed to Silicon Light Machines and Sony. His first project at PARC was to build solid-state x-ray detector systems to allow filmless radiology for medical, non-destructive testing, and security applications. This work was commercialized by dpiX, a PARC spinoff. Since 1999 he has been working on organic transistors for display applications and polysilicon circuits and systems. He holds 34 issued US patents and 71 journal or conference publications in the areas of spread spectrum coding, semiconductor lasers, micromachined light valves, micromachined displays, scanners, x-ray imaging components, amorphous and polysilicon circuits and systems, and printed electronics.
Dr. Apte is a member of the MRS and SID. He has won the Best Student Paper Award at SID'93 for his work on the GLV. He has served as chair and vice-chair of the Electronic Materials Society Symposium.
