Dr. Rak-Kyeong Seong received his Ph.D. at Imperial College London in 2013 under the supervision of Professor Amihay Hanany. He also received his bachelors degree at Imperial College and his masters degree at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. Prior to coming to the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center (YMSC) at Tsinghua University, he has been a postdoctoral research fellow at the Angstrom Laboratory, Uppsala University, where his hosts were Professor Guido Festuccia and Professor Maxim Zabzine. He has also been a postdoctoral research fellow at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study under the mentorship of Professor Piljin Yi.
His research in string theory has been multifold: while studying the interplay between the dynamics of branes in string theory and the classical and quantum behavior of supersymmetric gauge theories, he has also concentrated on introducing new brane configurations realizing supersymmetric gauge theories in various dimensions. He has extensively worked on worldvolume theories of branes probing affine Calabi-Yau spaces which have led to a rich field of interest to both physicists and mathematicians alike. The exact computation of gauge invariant observables as well as the application of novel techniques from mathematics - especially from algebraic geometry, number theory and graph theory - has been pivotal in Dr. Rak-Kyeong Seong’s work on understanding new gauge theory phenomena in different dimensions.
He joins the YMSC as a tenure track assistant professor from September 2017.
