Professor Ramon Z. Shaban is the Clinical Chair of Communicable Disease Control and Infection Prevention jointly appointed with the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney and the Centre for Population Health of Western Sydney Local Health District.
Professor Shaban is a leading internationally credentialed expert infection control practitioner with particular strengths in high-consequence infectious diseases, disease control, emergency care and health protection. As Clinical Chair he is District Director of Communicable Disease Control and Infection Prevention for Western Sydney Local Health District, where is provides strategic and operational leadership of infection prevention and disease control services. He is also Associate Director of the New South Wales Biocontainment Centre Committee, the state-of-the-art facility for the prevention, containment and management of high-consequence infectious disease located at Westmead Hospital in New South Wales. He and a team of his colleagues identified and managed the first cases of COVID-19 in NSW at Westmead Hospital, and he provides ongoing leadership for the state and national COVID-19 response. Professor Shaban is the strategic lead for infection prevention and control within the COVID-19 Clinical Expert Advisory Group for Western Sydney Local Health District and is a designated official spokesperson for the NSW Ministry of Health and University of Sydney on COVID-19. Professor Shaban is also the Head of the COVID-19 Management Committee for the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, a member of the University's Crisis Management Committee, and a member of the Vice-Chancellor's COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Panel. He is a Statutory Authorized Inspector for the Health Professional Councils Authority of New South Wales.
Professor Shaban is a Chief Investigator for Project HIRAID, a ground-breaking research program led by Professor Kate Curtis to improve the safety and quality of emergency nursing care. This program of research is funded by major competitive granting agencies including an NHMRC Partnership Grant is establishing the evidence-based for the only validated framework designed to support emergency nurses in assessing and managing emergency department patients after triage. It combines all essential elements in delivery of safe, quality nursing care.
Professor Shaban is Past President of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC), and a former member of the Australian Government Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare Healthcare-associated Infection Advisory Committee. He has served as ACIPC Executive Representative to the World Health Organization Global Outbreak and Response Network. During 2016 he served as Technical Advisor to the World Health Organization on Antimicrobial Resistance. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Australasian Emergency Care and a Senior Editor for the journal Infection, Disease and Health.
Professor Shaban provides expert witness, consultant opinion, and audit and investigation services.
