Dr. Smith's research interests span the development of advanced analytical methods and instrumentation, with particular emphasis on high-resolution separations and mass spectrometry, and their applications in biological and biomedical research. This has included creating and applying new ultra-sensitive technologies to quantitatively probe the entire arrays of proteins (i.e. proteomes) expressed by cells, tissues, and organisms. In the last decade, these efforts have broadened to include development and application of highly sensitive, high-throughput technologies for measuring the "pan-ome, (the array of biomolecule measurements that include the proteome, metabolome, lipidome, and glycome, to augment biological research. To enable much more effective pan-omics applications, he has recently lead the development of novel Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations (SLIM) and their use for very-high-throughput sample processing, reactions, separations, and other manipulations of ions in the gas phase, and particularly in conjunction with mass spectrometry.
