In 1984 he disclosed the epitaxially strained silicon field-effect transistor, now widely used throughout the semiconductor industry. He was elected to the the National Academy of Engineering in 1976 and is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He received the IEEE W.R.G. Baker Prize in 1976. keyes served the American Physical Society as Associate Editor of the Reviews of Modern Physics for applications of physics from 1976 to 1995.
