Bio
Professor Lee Sin-Doo (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) received the 59th Korea National Academy of Sciences Award on September 17, 2014. Professor Lee worked for Bell Communications Research from 1988 to 1992 where he first researched early versions of the OLEDs (organic-light-emitting diodes) together with the LCDs extended from his Ph. D. work for commercial applications. Professor Lee being a devout Catholic, he moved back to Korea when a Catholic priest urged him to contribute to Korea’s LCD development. In 1995, he presented the first generation 9.4 inch notebook computer, and in 1998, standardized the third generation 12.1 inch notebook computer, moving ahead of Japanese competitors. Afterwards he developed basic core-technologies for televisions and desktop monitors, supporting major LCD manufactures such as Samsung and LG. An endowed visiting professor at Sichuan University in China, he warned that “China is granting enormous benefits to bring back talented scientists over the world. Our government will face a crisis in high-tech industries unless we prepare and execute a detailed plan in advance.”
