As Founder, President and CEO of Proteas Bioanalytics Inc at the BioLabs LA facility of the Harbor-UCLA campus within The Lundquist Institute, Dr. Garbis is engaged in the development of innovative bioanalysis methods to allow the quantitative ultra-high resolution native proteomics and phosphoproteomics to a wide spectrum of biological and clinical specimens with unparralled sensitivity, precision and throughput. Such methods incorporate a combination of orthogonal liquid chromatographic techniques (including nano-pillar array nanofluidic lab-on- chip devices surface modified to accommodate a variety of physico-chemical properties), and the hyphenated use of ion-mobility and state-of-the-art ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry with FT-Orbitrap and time-of-flight mass spectrometers. Thanks to advancements in materials science and engineering concepts, Dr. Garbis and colleagues at Proteas Bioanalytics have secured a US Provisional Patent (US Patent No. 21208-30001.00) involving the use of integrated lab-on-chip designs to simultaneously interrogate the proteomes, peptidomes and metabolomes of single-cell and low-volume (10L or less) liquid biopsy (blood plasma/serum, organ adjacent ascitic fluids, prostatic fluid, nipple aspirate, and CSF fluid) specimens of relevance to infectious (TB, HIV) and non-infectious (cardiovascular, neuro-cognitive decline and cancer) disease. Over the last 30 years of industrial, government and academic experience, I have developed bioanalytical methods for the characterization of primary and secondary metabolites, medicinal/xenobiotic agents, peptides and proteins derived from cells, tissues, and biological fluids (urine and blood). I have published 74 papers including Antiviral Res, Analytical Chemistry, Lab chip, PNAS, Nature Communication, Mol Biol Cell, Journal of Proteome Research, Molecular and Cellular Proteomics, JCI Insight and others. Additionally, I co-teach a Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry course to investigators and interns at BioLabs LA.
