Taeghwan Hyeon (born 9 December 1964) is a South Korean scientist in researching chemical synthesis and applications of nanocrystals. He joined the faculty of the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering of Seoul National University in 1997. His research group actively studies synthesis of uniformly sized nanocrystals and their various applications. He directed the National Creative Research Initiative Center for Oxide Nanocrystalline Materials (2001–2011). In June 2012, he was appointed as a Director of Center for Nanoparticle Research of Institute for Basic Science (IBS). He was appointed as University Distinguished Professor in 2010. Since 2010, he has been serving as an associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.Hyeon was born in Dalseong County, Daegu, South Korea. Hyeon studied chemistry and received his B.A. in 1987 and M.S. in 1989 at Seoul National University, and Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in 1996 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the supervision of Kenneth S. Suslick. At Illinois Hyeon studied sonochemical synthesis of nanostructured catalytic and magnetic materials. From June 1996 to July 1997, he was a postdoctoral research associate in the Wolfgang M. H. Sachtler group at Northwestern University.
