My research focuses on the application of visual science in the field of ophthalmology, especially visual rehabilitation of artificial vision.
The original retinal prosthesis that we developed has succeeded to producing artificial vision (phosphenes) in 2 patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa using 9 electrodes. Behavioral testing has shown both object recognition and success in reaching tasks. However, some of our data has shown consistent deviations in target pointing, suggesting that a false orientation occurring in artificial vision. Therefore one aspect of our research is in developing visual rehabilitation programs as a method to improve visual orientation perception, as an adjunct to artificial vision systems.
Recently we developed a second generation retinal prosthesis with 49 electrodes, which is now in preparation for clinical trials. We are also planning to develop advanced image processing software to augment artificial vision systems and enable patients to walk safely whilst using retinal prostheses.
