Thomas H. Jeys was born in Long Beach, CA, in 1950. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of Houston, Houston, TX, in 1972 and 1975, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in atomic physics from William Marsh Rice University, Houston, in 1982.
His Ph.D. dissertation concerned the electric field ionization of sodium Rydberg atoms. From 1982 to 1985, he was an Assistant Professor of physics at Rice University. In 1986, he joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, MA, as a Member of Technical Staff. From 1986 to 1995, he worked on developing Nd:YAG sum-frequency sources of sodium resonance radiation for both the Department of Defense and astronomy adaptive optics applications. Since 1995, he has worked on the detection of aerosolized biological agents. He led the early development of the Biological Agent Warning Sensor, which in 2000 was transitioned to the Joint Biological Point Detection System. In 2004, he cochaired the Chemical and Biological Sensor Standards Study for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Since 2002, he has been investigating new biological agent detection techniques that will enable the development of low-cost biological agent sensors through use of low-cost components such as UV LED sources and charge-coupled device detectors. He is now a Senior Member of Technical Staff in the Laser Technology and Applications Group, MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
