I am a Reader in Performance Engineering in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London and am also the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Computing.
My main research area is performance engineering and my current work in this area is centred around the idea of executing programs in virtual time. This allows time dilation to be applied to components of an executing program, essentially imitating the effect of selectively speeding up or slowing down parts of the code. This provides a powerful extension to traditional profiling capabilities and also facilitates the seamless integration of executable code with performance models. The objective is to support model-based software performance engineering throughout the development life cycle. A variation on this theme is concerned with extending traditional unit testing frameworks with the ability to model the performance of units under test.
I am also interested in high-level languages, formalisms and tools that can be used to exploit the power of high-performance computer systems whilst reducing the software engineering burden. In relation to this I maintain a keen interest in the Haskell programming language and its application, and also its role in Computer Science education. I teach Haskell as a first programming language.
One of my favourite application areas is Virtual Plankton Ecology, which is about understanding the dynamics of the plankton ecosystem through the use of individual-based models. I co-designed the Virtual Ecology Workbench (VEW), which is a problem-solving environment for building and analysing plankton ecosystem models.
