First, we replaced repetitive human manual labor with machines in the industrial revolution. Then we replaced repetitive human mental labor with machines in the digital revolution. In both cases, we replaced solutions as devised by humans with similar (but faster and/or cheaper) solutions implemented with machines. The next step is to allow machines to learn solutions to problems themselves, and ultimately to even learn which problems are worth solving in the first place, with artificial intelligence. This should allow us, as designers of such systems, to solve problems by merely specifying them, rather than having to solve them ourselves.
For this purpose, I research general-purpose reinforcement-learning and deep-learning algorithms that allow systems (both real and virtual) to learn how to go from observations to actions.
