Leader of the research team working on evolution of nuclear hormone receptors.
After studying molecular biology in Montpellier and Strasbourg, he started research working on the v-erbA oncogene in Dominique Stéhelin's laboratory at the Pasteur Institute of Lille. V-erbA turns out to be a viral counterpart of the thyroid hormone receptor gene and this was the start of his interest in nuclear hormone receptors. Having a constant interest in molecular evolution and natural history he started an evolutionary analysis of the nuclear hormone receptors.
Vincent Laudet obtained his PhD degree in 1992 and established as a group leader in 1994. He moved in 1997 to the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
His laboratory has developed expertise in the analysis of the phylogeny and evolution of the nuclear receptor superfamily. It is known for having produced the first classification of this superfamily and having derived from this an official nomenclature that is used worldwide.
His research group has also a general expertise on nuclear receptors mainly devoted to orphan receptors (Rev-erb, ERR) but also on liganded ones (TR, RAR, RXR). The present domains of research of his laboratory include analysis of the origin of nuclear receptors signalling systems such as thyroid hormones, estrogens or retinoic acid. Using amphioxus as a model system his team scrutinized the origins of the thyroid hormones and their role in post-embryonic development. More recently he has developed zebrafish embryos to detect in vivo endocrine disrupters acting by modulating the transcriptional activity of NRs.
Vincent Laudet's laboratory has contributed to more than 150 scientific papers and 30 reviews including two books on molecular endocrinology, molecular evolution, genomics and developmental biology.
