His main research areas include nanomechanics of carbon nanotubes, smart structures, computational mechanics, and multiscale modeling of CNT-reinforced composite. Over the past fifteen years, Prof. He's research in these fields has resulted in over 150 SCI journal papers in various top international journals and received a total of more than 5000 citations (excluding self-cited ones) with h-index 42 from Web of Science. The paper 'Buckling analysis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes: a continuum model accounting for van der Waals interaction by He, X.Q., Kitipornchai, S., Liew, K.M., Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 53, 303-326, 2005' is the top 1% highly influential paper within its field according to Essential Science Indicators (THOMSON ISI). This paper ranks No. 3 in Top 10 Cited articles published in Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids from 2006 to 2010. The explicit formula derived in this paper for describing the van der Waals interaction between layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been applied by more than 50 researchers from USA, Japan, UK, Iran, India, China, etc., in building their mechanics model for the mechanical analysis of carbon nanotubes, such as mechanical properties, vibration, post-buckling, wave propagation, and so on. He has been a principal investigator for seventeen research grants (including seven GRF grants) with a total funding over HK$10 million.
