After a long and successful career to become Corporate Vice President and President, Aerospace Division of the Martin Marietta Corporation, he resigned and became President, Space Division of North American, where he directed the APOLLO and SATURN II programs. Bergen later became President of North American's Aerospace Group which had responsibility for APOLLO, SPACE SHUTTLE and ROCKETDYNE ROCKET ENGINES. Bergen received three PUBLIC SERVICE AWARDS of the NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION: (1) In 1969 "for his dedicated-service to the nation as a member of the Team which advanced the nation's capabilities in aeronautics & space demonstrating them in outstanding accomplishments culminating in APOLLO XI's first landing of man on the moon." (2) In 1969 "for his exceptional success of the GEMINI program which also included a PRESIDENTIAL CITATION and an additional award for the exceptional success of APOLLO 8, the first manned lunar orbit mission." (3) In 1969 for his outstanding contributions as a key leader of the government-industry team which made possible the exceptional success of the APOLLO program. In 1943, Bergen received the LAWRENCE SPERRY AWARD OF THE INSTITUTE OF AERONAUTICAL SCIENCES “for pioneer work which led to the realistic structural design criteria for high performance military aircraft."
