Dr. Wei's research has focused on “molecular and cellular biological studies of mitochondrial diseases, aging-related diseases and cancer” and “crosstalk between mitochondria and nucleus and metabolic shift in the differentiation of stem cells”. He was one of the first scientists to show that mitochondrial function decline and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are important contributory factors of human aging. His research team was one of the earliest to demonstrate that oxidative stress, oxidative damages and metabolic shift elicited by mtDNA mutation contribute to the pathophysiology of many mitochondrial diseases. In the past decade, Dr. Wei and many of his students have established that the biogenesis and respiratory function of mitochondria and antioxidant defenses are upregulated in a coordinate manner in the differentiation process of stem cells and are downregulated in iPSCs formation. He has published 400 research papers and >30 review articles in SCI journals in bioenergetics, free radical biology and medicine, aging research, mitochondrial medicine, stem cell research, and cell stress responses. Dr. Wei is currently the Director of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine and Free Radical Research, Changhua Christian Hospital, Changhua City, Taiwan.
