Research in the Sadovsky lab centers on feto-placental development. Using human placental cells (trophoblasts) as well as mouse models, the lab studies molecular pathways that govern placental adaptive response to injury. Primary areas of inquiry include: (1) the role of microRNAs in placental function, combining computationally identified sets of miRNA targets, RNAseq, and functional assays to decipher the critical role of unique placental microRNAs in viral replication and cellular resistance to viruses, (2) microRNA packaging and trafficking within exosomes, and (3) placental uptake, storage and mobilization of metabolic fuels, centering on fatty acids that are critical for feto-placental development.
