My research focuses on developing interactive systems for effective data analysis and communication. A core tenet of my approach is to examine the assumptions and design tradeoffs in models of interactive systems based on a deep understanding of users. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, I draw upon methods from visualization, data science, and human computer interaction.

My work contributes novel techniques and systems in three specific domains: information design (e.g. Data Illustrator, Data-Driven Guides), exploratory data analysis (e.g. MAQUI, imMens, DataTone, Ploceus), and document reading and analysis (e.g. Elastic Documents, Jigsaw). In addition, I have done theoretical and empirical research to understand human cognition in data analysis and visualization communication (e.g. interactive latency in exploratory analysis, frames and slants in visualization titles)
