TheASPERA-3experimentonMarsExpressprovidesthefirstmeasurementsofen- ergeticneutralatoms(ENAs)fromMars.Thesemeasurementsareusedtostudytheglobal structureoftheinteractionofthesolarwindwiththeMartianatmosphere. InthisstudywedescribethetailwardENAflowobservedatthenightsideofMars. AftercharacterizingenergyspectraofhydrogenENAsignals,wepresentcompositeim- agesoftheENAintensitiesandcomparethemtotheoreticalpredictions(empiricaland MHDmodels).WefindthatthetailwardflowofhydrogenENAsismainlygenerated byshockedsolarwindprotons.Despiteintensivesearch,nooxygenENAsabovethein- strumentthresholdaredetected.Theresultschallengeexistingplasmamodelsandcon- strainthehydrogenexosphericdensitiesandatmospherichydrogenandoxygenlossrates atlowsolaractivity.
