A Locally Coordinated Scatternet Scheduling Algorithm

There is growing interest in wireless personal area networksbuilt from portable devices equipped with short-rangeradio interfaces such as Bluetooth. These smallnetworks (called piconets) can be internetworked to formlarger scatternets by means of bridge nodes that participatein more than one piconet on a time division basis. How wellthis works depends to a large part on the mechanism usedto schedule communication across piconets.In this paper, we present a novel online scatternetscheduling algorithm, LCS, that effectively coordinates one-hopneighbors to converge to an efficient scatternet-widecommunication schedule. Unlike previous work, LCS isrobust and responsive to network conditions, dynamicallyadjusting the schedule based on varying workload conditions.We demonstrate that LCS has good performance onthroughput, end-to-end packet latency and energy usage undervarious traffic loads.
